Low energy and fatigue are rampant among parents. This can end up affecting quality of life, mood, family life, relationships, and career. Often self-esteem, self efficacy, and sense of self suffers. However, finding the right supplement(s) to help support your energy can feel like a miracle.

When To Use Supplements For Fatigue

A healthy lifestyle is the foundation for good health. For optimal energy, humans need: quality sleep, sense of purpose, community, safety, stability, clean air, good nutrition, good digestion, fun, time in nature, hydration, and rest. When one or more of those things aren’t adequate the result is often fatigue.

Ideally, getting back into a healthy lifestyle would automatically lead to restoration of good health and energy. This can be the case, however, sometimes a boost is needed and supplements can help.

Fatigue can get to the point where it isn’t possible to invest energy into lifestyle changes. In those cases, it may be wise to start with supplementation to build up reserves of energy until healthy changes are doable.

Lifestyle Essentials To Rebuild Energy

Supplements can work wonders, but there are some things that they can’t work against. In my opinion, the first two lifestyle factors to consider are sleep and dehydration. The rest can come with time.

Dehydration is the worst culprit. All the supplements in the world can’t fix fatigue caused by dehydration. Water, herbal tea, and my homemade electrolyte drink can all help address dehydration and give energy levels a small, but noticeable boost.

Sleep is another essential. In the list below is a supplement to help support sleep, but good sleep habits are also required.

Foundational Supplements Support Good Energy

The foundational supplements are a multivitamin, probiotic, and fish oil. It is possible to get all these things from food. If you are fatigued, chances are that you’re missing one or more of these foundational requirements. It might be time to take an honest look at your diet using a tracker like myfitnesspal or cronometer.

Creating A Supplement Plan To Address Fatiguesupplements for fatigue - Dr. Green Mom

If you’ve been experiencing unexplained fatigue for several weeks or months, it is wise to start with a trip to the doctor to rule out serious causes. An integrative doctor may run tests for iron, B12, blood cells, liver function, kidney function, hormones, and others on a case-by-case basis. They will also check into your medications to see if fatigue is a common side effect.

I use these steps when creating supplement plans for my patients:

  1. Investigate reasons for low energy
  2. Choose supplements to address root causes
  3. Assess efficacy
  4. Modify plan
