Hi Friends!
Dr. Mayer here! 👋
First and foremost, I want to say you may be confused, only because this is complicated. We have so many different governing bodies with different opinions and different ways of dosing vitamin A. There is mass hysteria overkill in the media, and our own CDC is super lacking data at the moment.
I encourage you to FIRST read my Measles Handbook linked below. I do believe this will help to clarify many of your questions.
Keep in mind, Vitamin A does NOT prevent Measles.
Next, if you choose to dose vitamin A, I encourage you to think about where in your diet and supplements you are currently getting vitamin A. Please keep in mind beta-carotene/carotenoid sources are not calculated for vitamin A toxicity (ie. My Dr. Green Mom brand of Prenatal/Postnatal Daily Nutrients).
Acute toxic doses of vitamin A can be defined 2 ways:
- Single ingestion of 100 times your RDA -or-
- Single ingestion of 25,000 IU per kg or more
Chronic vitamin A toxicity is defined as:
- Excessive ingestion of 25,000IU per kg daily for a period of 6 to 15 months
There are multiple ways to dose vitamin A:
- Daily to meet (or slightly exceed) the FDA RDA.
- Megadose
You may find the FDA RDA here in this article of mine.
I have included a chart in my article here for mega-dosing options. I typically go by the Dr. Green Mom dosing column because I take into consideration all the dietary and supplement sources of vitamin A. If you do not use this option, this does not mean you are overdosing.
If you are taking in vitamin A daily in food sources and/or supplementation, don’t feel the need to mega dose vitamin A, however you may (just speak to your doctor).
Personally, I megadose vitamin A for myself and kiddos a few times per year to be proactive. We also intake daily vitamin A. Your decision will be based upon the toxic dosing limits I defined above.
I do hope this helps. I have listed multiple resources for you to look at below!
One last thing – how to convert mcg to IU.
1 IU Vitamin A = 0.33 mcg (1 mcg = 3.3 IU)
Dr. Green Mom/Life Liquid Vitamin A:
Per one drop: 1500 mcg x 3.3 = 4,995 IU
*We do not include carotene in equation.
My Mega Vitamin A and my Neuroimmune Vitamin A have the same dosing, 5,000 IU per drop (just updated labels) – I updated the dosing on the Mega A label. Some of you may be confused.
You may certainly still dose this for infants and kiddos- 1 drop daily for 2 weeks, twice per year for adequate vitamin A supplementation. The new label does not have this.
Sincerely (and Hugs),
